Hello, as an idiot I bought a battery replacement for a Dell Latitude 7300 thinking it would fit my 7310.
The 7310 uses a 251 x 85.8mm battery; the pack sold for the 5310, 7300 and 7400 is a different size and physically cannot be adapted to fit it.
No, a battery made for a different Latitude generation cannot be adapted to fit the 7310. It isn’t a software lockout you can work around — the pack itself is a different physical size. Why this mix-up is so easy to make

How to tell which battery you actually have
Flip the pack over. If it’s stamped 0G74G, it’s the 42 WHr, 3-cell pack built for the 5300/5310/7300/7400 family — wrong for a 7310. One caveat inside that same family: the 7410 also has a 6-cell, 68 WHr option for buyers who wanted maximum runtime on the larger chassis. Dell’s spec sheet lists that pack at a longer footprint than the 3-cell and 4-cell versions, built for the extra depth of the 14-inch body — it does not fit the smaller 13-inch 7310 either. “Latitude 7410 battery” on a listing isn’t automatically safe; check that it’s the 39 WHr or 52 WHr variant, not the 6-cell one.
