File dimensions, masks, layers and other open applications all affect the memory your work needs.
The 16GB M4 is usable for photography. Adobe recommends 16GB or more of RAM for Lightroom Classic and specifies 16GB of unified memory for full GPU acceleration and AI features on Apple silicon. Calling that configuration incapable of RAW editing would contradict the software maker’s requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee fast processing of every project. Choose 16GB when your work is mostly individual images, ordinary exposure and color adjustments, and occasional retouching. Choose 24GB when simultaneous applications and more elaborate edits are routine. For large panoramas or substantial layered composites, investigate higher memory capacities before choosing a faster chip with the same memory allocation.
All three configurations are valid photography machines; none deserves a blanket warning. Their differences are memory headroom, storage capacity and processing resources. Frequent AI processing makes M4 Pro more relevant
A faster chip is most useful when you repeatedly wait for processing to finish. Culling a session, adjusting white balance and applying an occasional mask present a different purchasing decision from running AI Denoise across a large selection of photographs.
There is useful independent evidence against assuming that every interaction becomes dramatically faster with M4 Pro. Notebookcheck measured 174 points for the base M4 and 177 points for the 14-core M4 Pro in Cinebench 2024’s single-core test. That is a CPU benchmark, not a Lightroom timing, but the narrow gap supports a limited inference: moving up the range does not deliver a proportionate improvement in every lightly threaded task. The M4 Pro becomes more compelling through additional processing resources. Its entry version has 16 GPU cores, and Apple specifies 273GB/s memory bandwidth for M4 Pro. For demanding work, distinguish two bottlenecks. More memory gives large projects additional room; a stronger GPU can help supported processing tasks. Buying extra memory alone is not a promise of faster AI processing, and choosing M4 Pro with 24GB does not give a project more memory than an M4 with 24GB.

On its 14-inch M4 Pro review unit with the matte display, Notebookcheck measured 100% sRGB, 99.6% Display P3 and 89% Adobe RGB coverage, alongside a ColorChecker Delta E of 0.6. Those results support strong color accuracy on the tested unit, while showing that P3 coverage should not be mistaken for complete Adobe RGB coverage. For web galleries and typical screen delivery, that is encouraging evidence. For demanding print preparation, the Adobe RGB shortfall matters: some colors in the image or intended output can fall outside the display’s gamut. It does not prevent printing, but it limits what you can judge directly on screen.
Set the display up for the output you are judging:

The 1TB recommendation is about working room. As an illustration, 2,000 RAW files averaging 50MB occupy roughly 100GB before previews, layered edits and exports. That is arithmetic using an assumed file size, not a claim about every camera.
A 512GB model remains practical if completed shoots move to external storage. Neither capacity removes the need for a separate backup, and an external drive holding the only copy of your photographs is an archive rather than a backup.
