iPad A16: Magic Keyboard Folio or Combo Touch?

The Logitech Combo Touch is the better default for the iPad A16 if you want illuminated keys and a case that covers the tablet’s corners. Choose Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio instead if you regularly remove the entire case and prefer its magnetic back panel; its unlit keyboard makes it the weaker choice for typing in dim rooms.

Choose Combo Touch for evening typing and daily carrying

Backlighting is the clearest reason to choose Logitech. Its adjustable illumination helps when you need to find punctuation or unfamiliar shortcuts in a dark room. Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio has no key illumination, so choosing it means relying on ambient light when you need to see the legends.

The Combo Touch also makes more sense when you want the keyboard accessory to serve as your everyday case. Logitech specifies coverage for the front, back and corners, plus storage for an Apple Pencil or Logitech Crayon. That additional coverage is a practical reason to prefer it for an iPad carried between classrooms or workplaces. It is not evidence of a particular drop-survival rating. Detaching the Logitech keyboard leaves the protective case and stand on the tablet. That suits a routine where you type a document, remove the keyboard to read, then reconnect it later. You keep the case coverage during the change. Logitech’s detachable-keyboard design.

The drawback is the fitted shell: removing the keyboard does not give you a bare iPad. If holding the uncovered tablet is an important part of your routine, Apple has the more suitable attachment design.

Choose Apple when you frequently use the bare iPad

Apple’s advantage is that both pieces attach magnetically. You can remove the keyboard while keeping the stand, or remove the back panel as well. There is no fitted corner shell to work off the tablet. Apple’s attachment instructions.

That distinction matters more than a general claim that one accessory is “more premium.” If you alternate between desk typing and holding an uncovered iPad for reading or drawing, Apple’s design directly supports that routine. If you intend to leave the case installed continuously, this advantage matters much less.

Apple also explicitly specifies a click-anywhere trackpad, a 14-key function row and a scissor mechanism with 1 mm of key travel. Neither product warrants a blanket warning against buying it. The narrower verdict is that the Magic Keyboard Folio is worth considering for frequent case removal, while Combo Touch is the stronger general recommendation for illuminated typing and protective coverage.

Neither turns the A16 into a stable laptop on your knees

The practical consequence is that the surface must support both the keyboard in front and the stand behind the screen. On a desk, that arrangement is straightforward. On your knees or a shallow tray, support and available depth become part of the buying decision. This is an inference from their layouts, rather than a measured comparison of their open footprints.

COMPUTER BILD specifically found the Apple folio unsuitable for lap use and reported approximately 590 g for the keyboard and cover, or nearly 1.07 kg with its test iPad. That review used a 10th-generation iPad and a German keyboard layout; its measurement should not be presented as an exact weight for every A16 bundle. Logitech lists its corresponding case and keyboard at 572 g. Apple lists the A16 Wi-Fi tablet at 477 g, giving a calculated combined weight of 1,049 g, before adding a stylus. That calculation is based on manufacturer figures, not an independently weighed assembly. The useful finding is that the Logitech accessory weighs more than the tablet itself. Check the model name before ordering

For Logitech, select Combo Touch for iPad (10th gen & A16). The product family also contains a version for the 7th-, 8th- and 9th-generation iPads. The shared Combo Touch name does not make those cases interchangeable. Logitech’s separate compatibility selections.

For Apple, look for Magic Keyboard Folio, with compatibility stating iPad A16 or 10th generation. Apple’s current specification explicitly supports both, so older 10th-generation wording is not by itself a reason to reject this particular accessory. Apple’s compatibility list.
