Will Timetec 8GB DDR3L Work With an i7-640M?
The question

The confusing part is that the Timetec stick has the correct 204-pin shape and can operate at 1.5V. Its 1600 MT/s rating is not the decisive problem either. The incompatibility is how 8GB is organized on one module.

Why 8GB total does not mean one 8GB stick
Intel’s documentation for this processor family specifies two memory channels, one SO-DIMM per channel, DDR3-800 or DDR3-1066, and 1.5V non-ECC unbuffered memory. More importantly, the controller supports only 1Gb and 2Gb DRAM devices. Intel describes its maximum 8GB configuration as two double-sided x8 SO-DIMMs, not one 8GB module. Its supported-module table tops out at 4GB per SO-DIMM using sixteen 2Gb, 256M x8 devices. Intel’s first-generation mobile Core datasheet states these limits explicitly.
The arithmetic exposes the incompatibility:
- A 2Rx8 module normally has two ranks of eight x8 memory devices, or 16 devices in total.
- An 8GB module contains 64 gigabits.
- Dividing 64Gb by 16 devices gives 4Gb per device, conventionally described as 512M x8.
- The i7-640M controller documents support only through 2Gb, or 256M x8, per device.
Timetec’s own datasheet identifies its 1600 MT/s 8GB model as part number 76TT16NUSL2R8-8G, with a 2Rx8 organization and 256x8/512x8 device configurations. That makes the single 8GB version a 512M x8 design—the generation Intel’s controller does not list. Timetec’s DDR3 SO-DIMM datasheet supplies the part number and organization.
This is also why a newer 4GB 1Rx8 module can fail even though its capacity looks safe. Eight devices must provide the entire 32Gb module capacity, requiring 4Gb devices. For this platform, look specifically for 4GB 2Rx8, 256M x8 modules—not merely “4GB DDR3.”
The 1600 MHz label is not the main problem
Intel’s specification update lists the i7-640M at DDR3-800/1066; it cannot run memory at 1600 MT/s. Intel’s i7-640M identification table confirms 1066/800 MT/s for both the BGA and PGA versions of the processor.
A faster-rated DDR3 module can operate below its advertised maximum when its SPD chip contains a timing profile the laptop recognizes. Intel says the controller selects memory frequency from the modules’ SPD data. Therefore, a compatible 1333 or 1600 module with a suitable profile could run at 1066 rather than 1600.
That does not rescue this Timetec 8GB stick. Downclocking changes frequency and timings; it cannot change 4Gb memory devices into the 2Gb devices supported by the controller. Timetec also does not publish a complete SPD-profile table for this model, so a 1066 profile should not be assumed merely from the 1600 rating.
The 2x4GB PC3-8500 kit avoids both uncertainties: it uses the controller’s native 1066 MT/s rate and the supported 2Gb device organization.

The i7-640M platform specifies a 1.5V DDR3 interface. Timetec lists its PC3L-12800 module as dual-voltage 1.35V/1.5V, so the laptop can supply it at 1.5V. Timetec’s product specifications also identify the modules as 204-pin, non-ECC and unbuffered.
That dual-voltage behavior is normal for compliant DDR3L parts. Micron’s technical FAQ likewise states that its 1.35V DDR3 parts are backward-compatible with 1.5V operation. Micron’s DDR3 FAQ is useful confirmation of the voltage principle, although Timetec’s own dual-voltage specification is the relevant evidence for this particular module.
So voltage is not a reason to reject the Timetec stick. Capacity per module and chip density are.
Check the laptop, not only its processor
The processor specification is a ceiling, not a promise that every laptop manufacturer enabled the full configuration. Before ordering a 2x4GB kit, confirm all of the following in the laptop’s service manual:
- It contains two removable 204-pin DDR3 SO-DIMM slots.
- Its stated maximum is 8GB, normally shown as 2x4GB.
- It accepts non-ECC, unbuffered PC3-8500 DDR3 at 1.5V.
- Both slots are available rather than one being inaccessible or occupied by soldered memory.
- A 64-bit operating system is installed if you expect it to use the full capacity.
If the laptop has only one usable slot, the documented i7-640M limit leaves it at 4GB. Do not use a single 8GB stick as a workaround unless the laptop manufacturer explicitly lists an approved 8GB module for that exact model and BIOS revision.
If one suitable 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500 module is already installed, a matching second module may work. Replacing both with a matched 2x4GB kit is cleaner because it avoids mixing ranks, SPD timings and device organizations.
What independent testing does—and does not—show
No independent laboratory appears to have published a pass-or-fail test of Timetec part 76TT16NUSL2R8-8G in an i7-640M laptop. The compatibility verdict therefore comes from Intel’s controller limits and Timetec’s module organization, not an invented benchmark.
Notebookcheck measured several i7-640M notebooks and its results table includes systems configured with 8GB total. That demonstrates that 8GB systems existed, but the table does not disclose whether they used one or two modules. It therefore supports the platform’s 8GB total capacity without validating a single 8GB SO-DIMM. Notebookcheck’s i7-640M benchmark page should not be stretched beyond what it records.
Verify the 2x4GB kit after installation
Disconnect the charger, remove the battery when the laptop design permits it, and discharge static electricity before touching the modules. Install one 4GB SO-DIMM in each channel, then check the BIOS before loading the operating system. It should report approximately 8192MB and a memory rate of 1066 MT/s; some utilities display the underlying 533MHz clock because DDR transfers data twice per clock.
Run at least one complete memory-test pass afterward. If the laptop does not start, reseat the modules and test each 4GB stick separately in the primary slot. Two individually working modules that fail together point to a laptop BIOS, slot or model-specific limitation rather than a need for the unsupported 1x8GB stick.
The practical purchase is the Timetec 2x4GB DDR3-1066 2Rx8 kit. The Timetec 8GB DDR3L-1600 single module gets the voltage and connector right, but its 4Gb device density is wrong for the i7-640M generation.
