The Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 can play 1080p video, but it is the wrong tablet for watching that video in direct sunlight. Skip the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 for direct-sun viewing: Notebookcheck measured only 345.6 nits of average brightness, while the Galaxy Tab S9 FE produced roughly twice as much light.
Choose the Galaxy Tab S9 FE for outdoor video, provided the ambient temperature remains within Samsung’s normal operating range. If the tablet must run continuously above 35°C or remain mounted in an unshaded vehicle, neither consumer model is an honest recommendation.

The number that rules out the Galaxy Tab A8
The Tab A8’s video hardware is adequate. Its screen luminance is the failure.
Samsung’s specification sheet identifies the Wi-Fi Tab A8 as model SM-X200 and gives it a 10.5-inch, 1920 × 1200 TFT LCD. That resolution has enough pixels for a complete 1920 × 1080 image, with the remaining vertical pixels used for the black bars around a 16:9 video. The tablet therefore does not reduce Full HD video because its panel lacks resolution. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A8 specification sheet confirms the panel specifications.
Notebookcheck also found Widevine L1 certification, which permits protected streaming services to deliver HD video when the service, app and account allow it. The same laboratory measured 345.6 cd/m²—or nits—across the display and 368 nits at the brightest point. Its outdoor verdict was equally direct: the brightness reserve was too low, and shade was recommended. Notebookcheck’s Galaxy Tab A8 measurements separate the playback question from the visibility problem.
Turning the brightness slider fully to the right cannot create output the backlight lacks. Samsung’s Video brightness setting may alter brightness and color behavior in supported apps, but it cannot turn a roughly 346-nit panel into a sunlight-readable one. A matte protector can reduce sharp reflections, but it also scatters light and slightly softens the picture; it does not add luminance.
The practical boundary is simple: the Tab A8 is fine beneath a solid canopy, inside a vehicle with the tablet away from the windshield, or outdoors on an overcast day. It is not the model to buy when an unobstructed midday sun is part of the requirement.
Why 1080p playback is not the hard part
“Plays 1080p” can refer to three different things:
- The processor must decode the video codec.
- The display must have enough resolution to show Full HD detail.
- A protected streaming service must authorize an HD stream.
The Tab A8 clears the display-resolution requirement and carries Widevine L1. The Galaxy Tab S9 FE also carries Widevine L1 and raises the panel resolution to 2304 × 1440. Notebookcheck verified that certification rather than inferring it from the resolution. Its Galaxy Tab S9 FE review also recorded HDR10 and HLG playback support.
Widevine L1 is necessary for Full HD playback in many commercial streaming apps, but it is not a promise that every service will select 1080p. The app version, subscription tier, connection quality and that service’s device allowlist can still impose a lower stream. Locally stored 1080p files avoid the streaming-resolution decision, although the file’s codec and profile still need to be supported by the player.
Downloading a video before going outside is useful for a second reason: it removes weak cellular reception and sustained radio activity from the heat equation. It also prevents the stream from dropping resolution when outdoor reception fluctuates.
The Galaxy Tab S9 FE is the justified upgrade
The Galaxy Tab S9 FE’s measured brightness is the deciding advantage. Notebookcheck recorded a 694.7-nit average and a 747-nit maximum with the ambient-light sensor active. With the sensor disabled, it still reached 630 nits. That is approximately twice the Tab A8’s measured average, while retaining a similarly sized 10.9-inch screen.

Skip to the picksSamsung’s own figures use a different test method but point to the same distinction: the company specifies 600 nits normally and 720 nits in outdoor High Brightness Mode. Its Vision Booster feature adjusts contrast and color when it detects bright surroundings. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 FE documentation also lists the 2304 × 1440 panel and IP68 dust-and-water resistance.
For the outdoor boost, open Settings → Display and enable Adaptive brightness. Leave the light sensor uncovered and move the brightness slider up if necessary. Samsung documents that path in its Galaxy display-settings guide. Also confirm that Extra dim is off under Settings → Accessibility → Vision enhancements.
A 700-nit glossy screen can still show reflections when the sun is directly behind you. Positioning the tablet so it reflects a darker area rather than the sky improves perceived contrast without generating additional heat. The S9 FE is the better buy here because its backlight gives that positioning a useful starting point; the A8 gets visibility wrong for anyone who cannot move into shade.
Heat remains a separate limit
Screen brightness and heat tolerance are not interchangeable. The S9 FE’s IP68 rating concerns dust and water ingress; it is not a high-temperature operating certificate.
Samsung defines normal ambient operating conditions for Galaxy devices as 32–95°F, or 0–35°C. It specifically lists continual direct-sun use and hot parked cars as conditions that can raise device temperature. When protection measures activate, a Galaxy device may dim its screen, slow down, pause charging, close applications or shut off. Samsung’s operating-temperature guidance is therefore a harder boundary than any brightness result.
The Tab A8 business sheet contains a single -10–55°C line labelled “Operating / Non-Operating,” but it does not provide separate limits for those two states or promise continuous video playback at the upper figure. That ambiguous entry should not override Samsung’s clearer 0–35°C general operating guidance.
Notebookcheck measured a 40.9°C maximum surface temperature on the S9 FE during a demanding benchmark in a 21.1°C room and saw no performance throttling. That is useful evidence of stable laboratory behavior, not proof that the tablet can repeat the result after its glass and aluminum body have absorbed direct summer sun.
If the ambient air is already near 35°C, direct solar load can push the tablet beyond its preferred conditions even before video decoding adds heat. A brighter tablet may then dim itself precisely when the extra brightness is needed most.
A safer outdoor playback setup
Prepare the tablet before exposure rather than trying to cool it while it is playing:
- Charge it indoors and avoid charging in direct sun.
- Download the video over Wi-Fi, then disable unused cellular, GPS and Bluetooth radios.
- Enable Adaptive brightness on the S9 FE and verify that Extra dim is off.
- Keep the rear casing shaded and allow air to move around it; do not leave it flat on a hot dashboard.
- Use a light-colored overhead shade where possible. Shading the device is different from making the screen too dark to see.
- Stop playback if the display dims unexpectedly, charging pauses or a temperature warning appears. Disconnect power, close applications and let the device cool naturally out of the sun.
Do not place an overheated tablet against ice or inside a freezer. Rapid cooling can introduce condensation, while the underlying problem—operation outside the recommended environment—remains.
The buying boundary
Buy the Galaxy Tab S9 FE when the requirement is a conventional 10-inch-class tablet for 1080p video that remains readable during ordinary outdoor use. Its measured brightness, Widevine L1 support and IP68 construction provide a defensible upgrade over the Tab A8, although the glossy display and 0–35°C operating guidance still matter.
If the spending ceiling excludes the S9 FE, keep the Tab A8 and create shade rather than replacing it with another dim entry-level tablet. There is no setting or screen film that makes the A8 a reliable direct-sun display.
For continuous playback above 35°C, inside parked vehicles or on permanently exposed installations, stop shopping by consumer-tablet brightness alone. That job needs a purpose-built display with an explicit continuous operating-temperature range, a cooling plan and enough sustained luminance—not merely a tablet advertised as rugged.
