DualSense Edge Drift Test: When to Replace the Stick

The questionWhere do these come from?

Ps5 controller recs for shooters like R6I’ve been using my dual senses to play for quite a while now, but lately I’ve had 2 controllers back to back develop stick drift. I’d like to Get a new more reliable pro controller.

Test your DualSense Edge with neutral settings, then swap its stick modules to check whether unwanted movement follows the hardware.

To test a DualSense Edge for stick drift, open its stick sensitivity settings, remove the added deadzone in a temporary profile, and watch what happens when you release each stick. If unwanted input persists, swapping the left and right modules can help establish whether you need a replacement stick module.

Test on PS5 before changing your normal settings

Start with a separate test profile so you can return to your usual shooter settings afterward. Sony provides the following route to the stick controls:

  1. Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
  2. Select Create Custom Profile, give it a recognizable name, and select OK.
  3. Open Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone.
  4. Select the left or right stick and use the Default sensitivity curve with Deadzone adjustment at zero for this diagnostic check.
  5. Use Playtest to observe the response, then repeat for the other stick.

Sony documents the menu route, individual stick selection, sensitivity curves and Playtest function in its DualSense Edge profile guide. The zero-deadzone setup here is a diagnostic baseline, not a recommended setting for every game.

Rest the controller where nothing presses against either stick. Observe the resting position, then gently move a stick a small distance left and release it completely. Repeat right, up and down. Follow with larger movements and releases. Test both sticks separately.

Look for a repeatable offset after release, continuous wandering, or sudden jumps while untouched. Record which stick shows it and whether the result changes with the direction you released from. A short video of this sequence is more useful for a support request than a screenshot of one off-center dot.

A tiny offset alone does not establish that the module needs replacing. The practical question is whether it creates unwanted movement at settings that still let you aim comfortably.

An off-center dot is not an automatic failure

Independent measurements provide useful context. In a wired DualSense Edge test using firmware 0200, Gamepadla contributor John Punch measured center error of 3.0% on the left stick and 3.4% on the right. The recorded test date was April 16, 2026. Gamepadla explains that its centering procedure includes small deflections followed by release, which can expose poorer recentering than releasing from the outer edge. Gamepadla’s DualSense Edge measurements

Those figures describe the tested controller and procedure. They are not Sony acceptance limits, proof that every Edge behaves identically, or evidence of how long a new module will last. The cited Sony documentation does not give a numeric drift pass/fail threshold.

Keep center error separate from circularity error. Centering concerns where the stick rests after release; circularity concerns its reported path around the outer range. A circularity percentage is not a drift percentage, and a good circularity result cannot establish that the stick stays centered.

Use this practical decision rule: a small, stable offset that disappears with an unobtrusive deadzone can be managed through settings. Persistent movement, erratic jumps, or a deadzone large enough to spoil fine aiming warrants further diagnosis.

Check on PC without carrying over a hidden setting

On Windows, Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app lets you edit an Edge profile and select Test Your Controller. For a numeric cross-check, a browser tool such as Gamepadla’s Stick Tracer can display stick behavior and run drift-related checks.

Connect with the supplied USB cable, close controller remapping software, and select the physical DualSense Edge if the tester lists multiple devices. Repeat the same small-movement-and-release sequence used on PS5. Keep your hands completely off the sticks during the resting observations.

There is an easy trap here: Edge profiles are stored on the controller and remain usable on other devices. Moving from PS5 to PC does not automatically remove your custom deadzone. Sony assigns Fn + Triangle to the Default profile; select it when checking whether a custom profile explains a difference between devices. For explicit control over the diagnostic settings, use your temporary profile and verify its curve and deadzone in the app. Sony’s PlayStation Accessories customization guide

A browser test shows the input reaching that software. Do not describe it as an unfiltered sensor measurement or assume that two differently configured tools must report identical numbers.

If it only drifts in one shooter

Return to the affected game with the controller’s Default profile selected. Note the game’s current settings before changing anything. Check its inner stick deadzone or minimum input threshold, and temporarily disable motion aiming if enabled so that controller movement cannot confuse the observation.

Use a quiet practice area and compare the same stick behavior in another game. Movement in only one title makes that game’s input settings worth investigating, although another game may simply conceal the same offset with a larger deadzone.

Increase the affected stick’s inner deadzone by the smallest available increment, then repeat gentle aiming movements and hands-off checks. Stop when unwanted movement disappears without making small corrections feel unresponsive. Adjust one layer at a time so you can tell whether the change came from the game or the Edge profile.

A larger deadzone suppresses input near center; it does not repair the module. Sony’s own example states that a 10% deadzone requires more than 10% stick tilt before input registers. That explains why setting a large deadzone immediately can hide the symptom while sacrificing useful aiming movement. Sony’s deadzone explanation

Swap the modules to locate the fault

The Edge offers a useful diagnostic that a standard DualSense does not: Sony confirms its left and right stick modules are interchangeable. That makes a controlled swap possible before buying a part. Sony’s module replacement instructions

Follow Sony’s handling sequence:

  1. Turn off the controller so its player indicator is off, and disconnect USB.
  2. Slide the rear RELEASE latch and remove the front cover.
  3. Raise the release levers and slide out the modules, keeping track of their original sides.
  4. Install them on opposite sides along the grooves until seated with a click.
  5. Lower the levers and refit the front cover until it clicks into place.

Repeat the test with matching left/right curve and deadzone settings. Interpret the results as diagnostic evidence:

  • The abnormal input follows the physical module: this strongly points toward that module as the replacement target.
  • The abnormal input stays on the same controller side: recheck settings and seating; the result does not establish that buying a module will fix it.
  • Both modules behave abnormally: the swap is inconclusive. Continue with reset and support checks.

These interpretations are troubleshooting inferences from the interchangeable design, not a Sony-certified fault test.

What to replace, and when to contact support

For a fault isolated to one module, the relevant physical replacement is the PlayStation DualSense Edge Stick Module. Buy the complete Edge module; changing the removable thumb cap does not replace the sensing mechanism. A replacement module is a repair option, not a promise that drift can never recur.

Before purchasing, check any applicable return or warranty route. Also follow Sony’s basic troubleshooting: update the PS5 and controller software, turn off the PS5, press the controller’s rear reset button with a pin, then reconnect using the supplied USB cable and press the PS button. Sony says this physical reset preserves pairing and profile settings. Sony’s Edge troubleshooting instructions

Do not confuse that button with the PlayStation Accessories app’s Reset Your DualSense Edge Wireless Controller command, which deletes profiles and restores factory settings. Sony’s app reset documentation

After a replacement, repeat the same release test and the affected game check before restoring your preferred settings. If the problem stays on one controller side, survives a known-good module, or remains unresolved after Sony’s troubleshooting, contact PlayStation Support for repair assessment. Supply the profile settings, affected stick, test video and module-swap result.

The article recommends buying the complete Edge stick module as the appropriate repair once the swap test shows the abnormal input follows the module between controller sides.

Replace the complete module when repeat testing shows that the fault follows it between controller sides. It fits either side of the Edge, but it does not guarantee permanent freedom from drift.
