Will a Dyson DC40 Bin Fit UP32 or UP34?

That is the practical buying answer even though the machines look related. Dyson does not list either newer model against the DC40 bin, and it provides no supported procedure for converting one by exchanging its bottom flap.

The three part numbers settle the purchase decision

Dyson’s support page for bin 966375-01 lists DC40 variants, including the DC40i ErP, but not the UP32 or UP34. The model-specific parts list for the UP32 Ball Animal identifies bin 968648-01, while the UP34 Ball Animal Complete parts list identifies bin 969371-01.

Different part numbers alone do not prove that two plastic components could never be made to touch. The stronger evidence is that the model-specific lists do not overlap: Dyson sends an UP32 owner to 968648-01 and an UP34 owner to 969371-01, while the DC40 page confines 966375-01 to DC40 machines.

Skip the Dyson DC40 ErP bin assembly 966375-01 for an UP32 or UP34: neither newer vacuum appears on its documented compatibility list. The DC40 bin gets the choice wrong for owners of both newer models because it substitutes an unlisted assembly for the exact part Dyson specifies.

Swapping the flap does not establish compatibility

Changing the bin’s bottom flap might alter how the container closes, but it does not establish that the complete bin matches the cyclone, retaining catch, inlet and seals of another model. A bin that appears to clip onto the body has not necessarily demonstrated the airtight fit required in the vacuum’s airflow path.

Dyson’s DC40 operating manual tells the owner to refit the cyclone and clear-bin unit until it clicks and is secure. It does not describe transferring a bin flap to make that assembly fit a later model. The UP34 manual likewise documents removing, emptying and reinstalling its own bin rather than adapting a DC40 component.

No independent laboratory has published a cross-model leak measurement for a DC40 bin fitted to an UP32 or UP34. Independent testing of the proper UP34-class Ball Animal Complete does exist: Expert Reviews measured 19.5kPa before motor cutout and tested debris pickup using the supplied 1.8-litre bin, but that Ball Animal Complete test does not validate a DC40-bin conversion.

Consequently, a flap swap should be regarded as an undocumented modification, not a confirmed compatibility solution. Anyone claiming a perfect fit would need to identify the exact DC40 variant, exact newer model, flap used and an actual leakage test. A photograph showing that the bin hangs on the vacuum is not enough.

The correct bin for an UP32

For an UP32 Ball Animal, search for the complete 968648-01 bin assembly. Dyson’s support system assigns that part to UP32 product code 394518-02, and the corresponding bin page covers the Ball Animal and related Small Ball machines.

Listings may call it a clear bin, dirt bin, dust container or canister. Those names are less reliable than the six-digit part number. Before ordering, require the listing to state both UP32 and 968648-01; a listing that merely says “fits Dyson Ball vacuums” is too broad to settle compatibility.

The UP32 bin is the model-matched choice, but it is not a bridge between all three vacuums. It should not be bought as a future replacement for an UP34, whose official assembly is different.

The correct bin for an UP34

Choose 969371-01 for an UP34 Ball Animal Complete, Multi-floor or Origin. Dyson lists that bin for the larger Ball Animal family and assigns it directly to UP34 Ball Animal Complete product code 394520-01.

This is also the appropriate direction if bin capacity is influencing the choice between vacuums. Dyson specifies a 1.8-litre bin for the Ball Animal Complete and describes it as 60% larger than the standard Ball Animal bin. Reusing a smaller DC40 container would therefore undermine the main reason to choose the larger-bin machine even if an improvised mounting were possible.

The drawback is equally clear: 969371-01 is not the UP32 assembly. Do not assume that “UP” model numbers or a similar-looking cyclone make the two current bins interchangeable.

Earlier DC40 bins are not an exception

Not every DC40 uses the same bin. Dyson also documents part 923585-01 for a group of earlier DC40 Animal, Multi Floor and DC40i variants. That distinction matters when repairing a DC40, but it does not create an UP32 or UP34 match: the compatibility list for 923585-01 also contains only DC40-family machines.

If the old vacuum is labelled simply “DC40,” identify whether it is the ErP version before buying a DC40 replacement. Do not use colour, an online photograph or the existing flap shape as the identifier.

Verify the label before ordering

Remove the existing bin and read the machine label behind it. Record the model, full product code and serial number, then enter those details into Dyson’s support parts finder. The UP34 manual specifically locates the serial number behind the bin.

Use this ordering rule:

1. Match the complete vacuum model or product code, not just the words “Dyson Ball.”
2. Match the bin part number: 968648-01 for UP32 or 969371-01 for UP34.
3. Prefer a complete bin assembly rather than combining a used shell with a flap from another generation.
4. Reject a listing whose compatibility text conflicts with Dyson’s model-specific parts page.

If the label is missing or the product code returns a different bin number, contact Dyson with the serial number before ordering. What cannot be confirmed from the label should not be resolved by forcing the DC40 bin onto the machine.
