For movies, choose the 98QM6K Pro

Choose the TCL 98QM6K Pro over the 98Q77K for movie watching. The reason is not the size, resolution, or smart TV platform. Both are 98-inch-class 4K Google TVs. The decisive difference is the backlight.

TCL lists the 98QM6K Pro as a QD-Mini LED model with QLED quantum-dot display technology, 4K Ultra HD resolution, 144Hz panel refresh rate, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and “Up to LD500 Precise Dimming Series” local dimming on its official Canadian product page for the 98QM6K series, which is the same spec family shown for the Costco 98QM6K Pro listing. Costco’s product page for the 98QM6K Pro also lists it as Mini LED, full-array, 144Hz, and model 98QM6K Pro.

The Q77K is different. Costco’s 98Q77K listing identifies it as a QLED TV with a Direct Lit backlight, not Mini LED. RTINGS’ Q77K review is even plainer: it describes the Q77K as an HVA-panel TV with no local dimming. That is the key tradeoff for a theater room. Direct-lit LCD can still make a big image, but it cannot control dark movie scenes the same way a Mini LED local-dimming set can.

For dark-room movies, this means the QM6K Pro is the safer answer if you care about black level, HDR highlights, and letterbox-bar control. The Q77K can still be immersive because it is enormous, but it is the more compromised picture-quality choice.

Gaming makes the choice less clear

For console gaming, the gap is smaller than it is for movies. Glare control is the Q77K’s strongest case

The Q77K has one real reason to stay in the conversation: the 98-inch model is described as using a Matte HVA Panel, and Costco says that panel is meant to block reflections. RTINGS also notes that the 85-inch and 98-inch Q77K variants have a matte anti-reflective coating.

That matters if the TV faces windows, recessed lights, or white walls in a bright multipurpose room. In that situation, reflection handling can feel more important than perfect black level because a glossy or semi-gloss screen can wash out no matter how good the panel is.

For the theater-room scenario described in the search intent, though, the better fix is usually room control: move lamps out of the screen reflection path, use dimmable lighting behind the seating position, and avoid direct sunlight on the screen. Do not assume every firmware feature, warranty bundle, included service, or retailer package is identical to the regular 98QM6K unless the exact listing or box label confirms it.

What to check before ordering either 98-inch TV

Measure the wall, stand, and delivery path before thinking about picture modes. TCL lists the 98QM6K / 98QM6K Pro cabinet at about 85.83 inches wide and 49.09 inches high without the stand. Costco lists the 98Q77K at about 85.7 inches wide and 49.1 inches high without the stand. Both are too large for casual furniture guesses.

For mounting, both the 98QM6K Pro and 98Q77K are listed with a 600 x 500 VESA pattern. TCL’s 98Q77K user guide says the wall mount must bear at least five times the TV’s net weight and recommends professional installation. That warning should be taken literally for a 98-inch panel.

The final decision is straightforward: choose the 98QM6K Pro for a theater-room upgrade where movies, HDR games, and black-level performance matter. Choose the 98Q77K only when the giant screen is the main goal and the room’s reflections matter more than Mini LED contrast.
