First identify which docking failure you have

The Qrevo Edge uses more than one component during docking. The robot’s communication sensor is identified as A3-8 under the magnetic top cover, while the dock has a separate dock location beacon, identified as A10-16. The robot and dock also have charging contacts. These components produce three failures that can look similar but require different responses.

Clean the communication path before resetting anything

  1. Remove the robot from the dock. Unplug the dock before cleaning or maintenance.
  2. Lift off the robot’s magnetic top cover. Locate the communication sensor toward the rear of the exposed compartment, using the A3 diagram in the manual rather than confusing it with the front obstacle-avoidance camera.
  3. Wipe the communication-sensor window with a clean, soft, dry microfiber cloth.
  4. Wipe the dock location beacon and both sets of charging contacts with a dry part of the cloth. Do not spray cleaner onto the robot or dock.
  5. Reconnect the dock and check its front indicator. It should be illuminated while the powered dock is empty, turn off when the robot is correctly charging, and turn red for a dock error.

Roborock specifically instructs owners to clean the robot sensors and charging contacts with a soft, dry cloth. Its general Qrevo troubleshooting page permits a cloth lightly moistened with alcohol or an eraser when charging contacts have visible stains or oxidation, but a first-use machine should not normally need that treatment. Start dry, and never use a water-wet cloth on the contacts. Roborock’s charging guidance also says the dock should be unplugged for about two minutes when a charging or contact fault persists.

Give the dock the clear space specified for the Edge

Place the dock on hard, level flooring, flat against a wall. The model-specific manual calls for a clear envelope at least 0.9 m high, 0.4 m wide and 1.2 m deep. Keep the power cord in its storage channel so the robot cannot pull the dock out of position.

Remove anything covering the dock location beacon, including packaging film that may have survived setup. Direct sunlight can also interfere with the beacon, so run the test with strong sun blocked or move the dock temporarily to an evenly lit position. Do not test it on carpet or a soft mat: Roborock warns that a tilted dock can cause docking and departure failures.

Press down on both sides of the dock base and its middle connecting section to confirm that it is fully attached. The manual says these points should lock with a click. Also reseat the clean-water tank, dirty-water tank, dust-container cover and cleaning-tray module if the dock indicator is red.

Run a controlled short-range docking test

Place the powered robot directly in front of the dock within the cleared approach area, then press the Dock button. Do not begin with a whole-home cleaning run. The short test removes distance, closed doors and most map-navigation errors from the diagnosis.

Watch the dock indicator as the robot approaches:

  • If the robot cannot orient toward the dock even at short range, recheck the communication sensor and dock beacon. A map problem is less persuasive when the robot cannot recognize a visible dock immediately in front of it.
  • If it enters but repeatedly reverses out, watch whether the dock light turns off. A light that remains on indicates that proper charging contact has not been established.
  • If it docks and the light turns off, let it charge briefly. Then press the robot’s Dock button once while it is docked to request emptying; press and hold it to request mop washing. Those are the Qrevo Edge manual’s documented physical-button commands.

The physical command test is important because manually placing the robot on the dock is not a complete functional test. Roborock says manual placement ends the current cleanup and does not automatically trigger emptying. Failure to auto-empty immediately after carrying the robot to the dock therefore does not, by itself, prove that the communication module is broken.

Power-cycle before erasing the map

Take the robot off the charger and hold its Power button to shut it down, then turn it back on. Separately, unplug the dock for approximately two minutes, reconnect it firmly, and repeat the short-range docking test. If the empty dock has no indicator light, confirm both ends of the power cord are seated and try a known-working outlet.

Do not press the recessed Reset button as the first response. The manual says a system reset restores Wi-Fi and scheduled-cleaning settings to factory defaults. That reset is intended for a robot that does not respond to its buttons or cannot be turned off, not as the opening move for every docking failure.

No specific Qrevo Edge firmware version is documented by Roborock as the universal fix for this communication fault. Update through the normal Roborock app if an official update is offered, but do not install unofficial firmware or repeat factory resets after the controlled physical test has already failed.

Rebuild the map only when the dock hardware responds

A new map is worth trying when all three of these are true:

  • The robot charges normally after docking itself.
  • The physical emptying and mop-washing commands work.
  • The dock is absent or incorrectly positioned on the saved map.

Create the replacement map with the robot starting from the dock, and do not move the dock during mapping. Roborock states that the robot may not return for mop washing when no dock is found on the app map. Starting from the dock is therefore more important than repeatedly deleting the account or resetting Wi-Fi.

If the robot still cannot recognize a dock placed directly in front of it, deleting another map is unlikely to repair the communication sensor or location beacon.

Skip the replacement sensor module on a new unit

Skip buying an aftermarket Roborock Qrevo Edge communication sensor module for a first-use failure. The Edge manual identifies the sensor but provides no user replacement procedure or compatible spare-part number, and Roborock warns against dismantling, repairing or modifying the dock. The manual’s listed US pairing is robot model RRE0VCM with dock EWFD30LRR; similarly named Edge, Edge S5A and regional variants should not be assumed to use interchangeable electronic modules.

Opening a new robot also creates warranty risk. Roborock’s US warranty excludes faults caused by unauthorized repair, modification or improper parts. For qualifying US purchases, new products have a one-year limited warranty; coverage and return periods elsewhere depend on the seller and region. Roborock’s warranty terms explain those limitations.

The point where this needs an exchange or RMA

Stop troubleshooting and contact the seller or Roborock when any of these remains after cleaning and one complete power cycle:

  • The powered dock’s indicator never illuminates with the robot removed, despite a firmly seated cable and working outlet.
  • The robot cannot detect or align with the dock during the short-range test.
  • It docks and charges but neither physical dock command starts emptying or mop washing.
  • The app repeatedly reports a communication-sensor or dock-communication error.
  • The dock indicator remains red after its tanks and cleaning-tray module are correctly installed.

Record a short video showing the robot placed directly in front of the dock, the failed Dock-button attempt and the dock indicator. Include the robot and dock model numbers, serial number, app error text and proof of purchase when contacting the appropriate entry in Roborock’s regional support directory.

Independent testing does not provide a module-level home diagnostic. Vacuum Wars measured 1.98 minutes of operation per battery percentage and estimated 1,677 square feet per charge in its fixed-floor-plan Qrevo Edge testing, while reporting that the robot navigated without getting stuck. It did not publish a measurement that can prove whether an individual communication sensor or dock beacon has failed. Vacuum Wars’ Qrevo Edge test therefore supports that persistent docking blindness is not expected normal operation, but the clean short-range test—not a benchmark—is what determines whether home recovery has run out.
