Noctua NH-L9i-17xx in a Compact MSI Prebuilt: Fit Check
The questionWhere do these come from?
Changing the cooler and adding some fans. Mag Infinite s3
Hi everyone! Little by little I'm getting into pc building and modifying (not that much experience but learning) so... I have my MSI mag infinite s3 with i5-13th gen, 4060ti and 16gb ddr5.
The NH-L9i-17xx fits most compact MSI prebuilts only if the CPU is a socket LGA1700 Intel chip and the board is a standard mount.
The Noctua NH-L9i-17xx fits a compact MSI prebuilt if two things are true: the CPU is an Intel chip in the LGA1700 socket, and the case leaves at least the cooler’s height (37 mm with the fan fitted) above the CPU. If either fails, it does not fit, and no amount of airflow tuning changes that. Skip tower coolers for these cases. The cooler is only the better move when the CPU is actually thermally limited, not just loud.
Sourcing note: the dimensions and fan figures below come from the specifications reproduced by APH Networks, and the temperature behaviour from APH Networks’ i7-12700K test. Funky Kit’s review covers the accessory duct kit. Confirm everything on Noctua’s own product page and CPU compatibility list before buying.
Check the socket before anything else
The “17xx” in the name means LGA1700, which covers 12th, 13th and 14th generation Intel Core desktop chips. APH Networks lists the socket support as Intel LGA1700 only. It does not fit AMD sockets (AM4, AM5), and it does not fit older Intel sockets such as LGA1200. Many compact MSI desktops, including some of the small Trident-style and Infinite-style models, ship with AMD Ryzen options, so a Ryzen model needs a different cooler line entirely. Open the system information (Windows: Win+R, msinfo32) and read the processor name: an Intel 12th to 14th gen part with a 5-digit model number in the 12xxx to 14xxx range is the right family.
Check whether the cooler is standard
This is the fact most forum answers skip. Some compact prebuilts use a proprietary heatsink, a custom board layout or a blower-style duct tied to the chassis fan. A standard Intel LGA1700 board has a 4-hole 78 mm pattern with a retention frame. If the original cooler pulls off with four screws or push-pins onto that pattern, a standard aftermarket cooler can replace it. If the heatsink is bolted to a bracket that is part of the case, ducted into an exhaust, or the power connector is not a standard 4-pin PWM header, a swap becomes a modification project, and in that case do not buy anything yet.

| Verdict | Deciding figure | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| NH-L9i-17xx | Buy | 37 mm with fan, 23 mm without; 92 mm fan | Limited capacity under heavy sustained load |
| NH-L9x65 | Consider | about 65 mm height | Needs far more vertical room |
| Thermalright AXP90-X36 | Consider | 36 mm class height | Verify socket kit on the listing |
| Cooler Master Hyper 212 | Skip | tower, over 100 mm tall | Will not fit a compact case |
Measure from the top of the CPU heat spreader to the underside of the side panel or the nearest obstruction. If the number is under 37 mm, even this cooler will not seat with its stock fan, and the honest fix is airflow work or a different case. APH Networks lists the heatsink alone at 23 mm, and its fan accepts 14 mm or 25 mm thick mounts, so a case that is only slightly too tight may still work with the thinner fan option. Funky Kit notes that the small footprint leaves RAM and PCIe slots unobstructed, so the clearance around the socket (RAM slots, M.2 heatsinks) matters less than the height.
When it is the wrong upgrade
The L9i is a low-profile cooler. Its small fin stack cannot dissipate as much as a tower. In APH Networks’ test with a Core i7-12700K, the cooler idled at 47C and, under a worst-case Prime95 load, could not keep the chip cool: the CPU bounced off its 100C limit with thermal throttling. The reviewer still judged the result acceptable for the size, but warned that users may see throttling in CPU-intensive applications. If the processor is a locked “non-K” part or a low-power “T” model, the swap is sensible. If it is a high-wattage unlocked chip in a very small case, expect to cap power limits in the BIOS regardless of cooler, and weigh whether a bigger case is the real answer.
Funky Kit’s review also covers Noctua’s NA-FD1 duct kit, which Noctua claims can improve CPU temperatures by as much as 5C or more depending on the setup; that is a manufacturer claim, not a result from the page read for this article.
What to do if nothing fits
If the machine is on an AMD socket, buy the AMD-compatible version of whichever low-profile cooler you choose. If the heatsink is proprietary, the choices are keeping the stock part, cleaning the dust filter and heatsink, replacing the thermal paste, and setting a fan curve or power limit in BIOS. Those cost nothing and are the correct first step for any prebuilt that merely runs loud. If the machine is under warranty, check MSI’s terms first, as changing the cooler can void it.
Short version
- Intel LGA1700 plus a standard 4-hole mount plus at least 37 mm of height: buy the NH-L9i-17xx.
- About 65 mm of height: the NH-L9x65 is the roomier option.
- AMD or proprietary cooler: neither fits as-is; do not buy until confirmed.
- Tower coolers: skip them in a compact case.

Noctua NH-L9i-17xx, Quiet High-Performance Low-Profile CPU Cooler | Only 37mm Height, ITX SFF Low-Noise Cooling, For LGA1851/1700, 92mm Slim Fan, No RAM or PCIe Overhang, Rich Accessory Kit
Noctua
At 37 mm tall with the 92 mm fan fitted (23 mm without it), it clears the side panel of cases where a tower cooler cannot go, provided the board uses the standard LGA1700 hole pattern.
The pick for a compact MSI prebuilt with a socket LGA1700 Intel CPU and a standard cooler mount. It is the low-profile option and the one the rest of the page is measured against; the drawback is limited cooling capacity, so it suits non-K, lower-wattage chips better than a heavily boosting i7 or i9.Available at Amazon(paid link) — opens Amazon in a new tab. Noctua NH-L9x65, Quiet High-Performance Low-Profile CPU Cooler | 65mm Height, ITX SFF Low-Noise Cooling, For Intel and AMD, 92mm Slim Fan, No RAM or PCIe Overhang, Rich Accessory Kit
Noctua
Its extra height only helps if the chassis has around 65 mm of vertical clearance; in the thinnest cases it will not close the panel.
An alternative when the case has headroom of about 65 mm above the CPU and the owner wants a little more cooling than the L9i. Check the case before buying, as taller is exactly what many compact MSI chassis do not allow.Available at Amazon(paid link) — opens Amazon in a new tab. Price and availability shown there.

Skip — A single-tower cooler of this class stands well over 100 mm tall, far beyond the clearance in a compact case, and its fan can foul tall RAM or the side panel.
