AirPods 2 Mics Dead? What to Replace Them With

Test each AirPod separately before buying anything. If both AirPods 2 microphones remain silent or unusably distorted after individual recording tests and a factory reset, replace the pair: AirPods 5 are the sensible open-fit successor, while another AirPods 2 pair makes sense only when its exact shell and double-tap controls are non-negotiable.

Skip AirPods 4 as a new long-term replacement. Apple has already superseded it with AirPods 5, whose published earbud dimensions and weight match AirPods 4 while adding Active Noise Cancellation as standard and improving dust and water resistance from IP54 to IP57. AirPods 4 gets the timing wrong for anyone making a fresh purchase rather than replacing one missing AirPod.

Prove both microphones are actually dead

AirPods can automatically choose either earbud as the microphone, so a bad left microphone can be hidden until the system switches to it. Test the sides deliberately:

1. Connect both AirPods 2 and open Settings > [your AirPods name] > Microphone.
2. Select Always Left AirPod and record the same ten-second sentence in Voice Memos.
3. Select Always Right AirPod and repeat the recording at the same distance and speaking volume.
4. Disconnect the AirPods and make a third recording with the iPhone microphone.

Apple confirms that Always Left and Always Right force the selected earbud to act as the microphone. If one AirPod records properly, leaving the setting on that side is a usable temporary workaround. If both AirPod recordings fail but the phone recording is clear, the evidence points to the AirPods rather than the app or phone microphone. If every recording fails, troubleshoot the phone or its microphone permissions before replacing the earbuds. Apple documents the microphone selector and its exact menu path.

Next, reset the AirPods 2. Put them in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, forget them under Settings > Bluetooth, reopen the lid, and hold the rear setup button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber and then white. Reconnect and repeat both recordings. Those are Apple’s model-specific reset steps, not the front-of-case tapping sequence used by newer AirPods.

Do not apply Apple’s liquid mesh-cleaning procedure for AirPods 3 and 4 to AirPods 2: the company’s instructions name only those newer models. For AirPods 2, avoid running them under water, inserting sharp objects, or using abrasives. If cleaning and resetting do not restore either microphone, Apple says service requires inspection and may result in repair or replacement. There is no microphone setting that repairs failed hardware. Apple’s cleaning limits and AirPods service process make that boundary explicit.

The replacement shortlist

AirPods 5 are the general recommendation because they are Apple’s current open-fit model, retain the H2 chip and dual beamforming microphones, include Voice Isolation and ANC, and carry an IP57 rating. The standard version uses a USB-C-only case and is rated for four hours with ANC enabled. Apple’s AirPods 5 specification page provides those figures.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are worth considering when on-stem volume adjustment, Qi or Apple Watch charging, the Find My case speaker, or the five-hour ANC battery rating matters. Those are concrete upgrades over the standard case bundle, but they do not turn the earbuds into the AirPods 2 shape or restore double-tap controls.

Why the Gen 4 shape is not Gen 2 again

AirPods 4 may look like a direct continuation of the original open AirPods, but the measurements show a meaningful redesign. Compared with AirPods 2, each AirPods 4 earbud is 10.3 mm shorter, 1.8 mm wider, 0.1 mm deeper and 0.3 g heavier. Apple lists AirPods 2 at 40.5 × 16.5 × 18.0 mm and 4 g, while AirPods 4 measure 30.2 × 18.3 × 18.1 mm and 4.3 g.

The extra width is more relevant to the part resting in the ear than the shorter stem, but dimensions cannot predict comfort. The shell has no interchangeable tips, fins or hooks. SoundGuys therefore recommends trying the AirPods 4 before buying and notes that its unassisted test fixture produced a lower audio score because the fixed shape did not achieve an ideal fit. That is the useful warning for an AirPods 2 owner: “open fit” does not mean “same fit.” SoundGuys measured a 3.6 MDAQS result and documented the fit limitation.

AirPods 5 have the same published maximum dimensions and weight as AirPods 4. That makes them the relevant current option when considering the Gen 4 size, but identical measurements still do not prove identical pressure points in every ear. Buy from somewhere with an appropriate return policy if the AirPods 2 shell is one of the few shapes that stays secure for you.

Double-tap controls do not carry forward

AirPods 2 let you assign a double-tap action to each earbud. AirPods 4 and 5 instead use a force sensor on the stem: press once for play, pause or answering; twice to skip forward or end a call; three times to skip back. The newer models cannot be configured to behave like the old shell-tap interface. Apple’s AirPods 2 specifications identify double-tap as the native control, while Apple’s settings guide separates it from the force-sensor system.

That difference matters if squeezing a stem is difficult or if tapping the outside of the earbud is already muscle memory. In that narrow case, another AirPods 2 pair remains defensible. The tradeoff is measurable: it is a 2019 H1 model using Bluetooth 5.0 and Lightning charging, with no published ingress-protection rating. It preserves familiarity rather than providing a modern microphone platform.

What independent microphone testing can establish

Independent tests describe call quality, not long-term failure rates. RTINGS found the AirPods 4 microphone boxy and thin and reported that loud background noise could overwhelm speech. SoundGuys recorded AirPods 4 microphone samples in office, street, wind and reverberant conditions; it found speech generally intelligible but noted that processing sometimes cut out part of the voice. RTINGS’ AirPods 4 measurements and the SoundGuys recordings support a cautious conclusion: AirPods 4 can handle ordinary calls, but they are not a proven solution for demanding calls in loud places.

As of September 13, 2026, no independent lab has published microphone or battery measurements for AirPods 5; Apple announced them on September 9 with store availability beginning September 18. The AirPods 5 microphone features and battery figures are therefore manufacturer claims, not independently replicated results. Apple did conduct an IEC 60268-24 noise-reduction comparison, but that measures ANC rather than voice-call quality or microphone longevity. Apple’s announcement explains the test and release timing.

That uncertainty does not make AirPods 5 a bad replacement. It means nobody can honestly promise that switching generations prevents another microphone failure. If microphone performance is mission-critical, wait for independent AirPods 5 call tests rather than treating “Voice Isolation” or “studio-quality recording” as proof of real-world reliability.

The decision in one line

After both sides fail the forced-left and forced-right recording tests and a reset, buy AirPods 5 for the current open-fit upgrade. Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case only for its volume swipe, wireless charging and extra rated ANC hour; consider AirPods 2 only when its exact fit and double-tap interface outweigh its older H1 and Lightning platform, and skip AirPods 4 because it no longer offers the best long-term route into the Gen 4-sized design.
