Nova 7 Gen 2 Mic Dead? Fix This First

The Arctis Nova 7 Wireless Gen 2 mic is usually not dead; it is most often muted, assigned to the wrong input device, blocked by app permissions, or stuck after a wireless/firmware fault. If the mic LED never responds, the headset is not detected in SteelSeries GG, or no device can record from it after a reset, treat it as a support or RMA issue rather than a settings problem.

Start with the headset’s physical mute

On the Arctis Nova 7 line, the physical mute button is on the headset. A red mic LED means the headset mic is muted. Press the mic mute button once, then check whether the LED turns off and whether Windows, Discord, PlayStation, Xbox, or the game starts showing input.

Do not use the retractable mic position as the mute test. SteelSeries says the Nova 7 / Nova 7 Gen 2 microphone can still pick up sound while retracted, but it should be extended and kept close to your mouth for best quality. So if people say you sound far away, muffled, or intermittent, pull the mic out fully and place it near the corner of your mouth before changing software settings.

Also check sidetone separately. Sidetone is your own mic audio routed back into the headset. If sidetone is off, you may think the mic is dead even when chat can hear you. In SteelSeries GG, go to Engine, select the headset, open Audio, find MIC SIDETONE, adjust it, and press Save. Sidetone is not the same as chat input, so use a real recording test as the final check.

Point Windows and each app to the headset mic

On Windows, the most common failure is that the headset audio output works while the microphone input is pointed somewhere else. Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input and choose the SteelSeries / Arctis Nova microphone device. Then speak and watch the input meter.

If the Windows meter moves but Discord, Teams, OBS, Steam, or a game does not, the headset is working and the app is wrong. In Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device and select the SteelSeries mic instead of Default. In OBS, check the exact Mic/Auxiliary Audio source. In games, look for Voice Chat Input Device, Microphone Device, or Input Device and avoid leaving it on a stale controller, webcam, monitor, or laptop mic.

If the Windows meter does not move, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn microphone access on, allow desktop apps if needed, then retest in Settings > System > Sound > Input.

Choose the correct Sonar input device

SteelSeries GG Sonar can create virtual devices, and that can make the Nova 7 look broken when the wrong one is selected. The practical test is simple: temporarily choose the physical headset microphone directly in Windows or the app. If that works, the hardware is fine and Sonar routing needs cleanup.

Use this comparison before changing more settings:

If the physical mic works but SteelSeries Sonar Microphone does not, open SteelSeries GG > Sonar > Mixer and confirm the mic source is assigned to the Nova 7 microphone. Also check that Sonar has not muted the microphone channel. If Sonar keeps breaking routing after sleep or reboot, leave the app on the physical input device until the GG installation is repaired or updated.

One-platform failures point to chat assignment

A one-platform failure usually means the headset is connected but chat input is not assigned correctly. On PlayStation, check the console microphone/input device and make sure the game has voice chat enabled. On Xbox, only the Nova 7X / Nova 7X Gen 2 is designed for Xbox wireless use through its included 2.4 GHz dongle, and SteelSeries says Xbox compatibility is built into the headset model, not added by swapping dongles.

On Switch, Steam Deck, handhelds, phones, and tablets, be careful with Bluetooth. Bluetooth can carry call audio, but many games and consoles handle Bluetooth microphones differently from 2.4 GHz USB audio. If voice chat matters, test the 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle first, not Bluetooth.

If the mic fails only in one game, reset that game’s voice settings and check push-to-talk. A working Windows recorder or Discord test means the Nova 7 mic is not the problem.

Check the firmware after setup or travel

SteelSeries says the Arctis Nova 7 may need a firmware update during initial setup, and updates are installed through SteelSeries GG on PC or Mac. Connect the headset and wireless dongle, open GG > Engine, and look for a Critical Update banner. Do not unplug the headset during the update. If no update banner appears, SteelSeries says the device is already up to date.

If the headset was tossed in a bag, used across several devices, or left paired to Bluetooth, do a hardware reset. Remove the cushion from the right ear cup. Under that cushion is a pinhole reset switch. Press it with a paperclip or pin for about 1-2 seconds, then reconnect the headset and dongle.

For Gen 2 specifically, SteelSeries also says factory reset can be done from the SteelSeries GG desktop app or the SteelSeries Companion App. Use the app reset if the headset still appears in software; use the pinhole reset if it does not.

Poor sound does not prove the mic is defective

A quiet Nova 7 Gen 2 mic is not always a defect. First extend the boom fully and move it close to your mouth. Then turn off aggressive noise suppression in Discord, Windows voice apps, or game chat and test again. If you are on PC, Sonar AI noise reduction can help with keyboard clicks and fans, but over-processing can make some voices sound thin or gated.

Static is different. If static appears only when sidetone is enabled, lower or disable MIC SIDETONE in GG > Engine > Audio and save the change. If static appears in recordings made with sidetone off, test another USB port, remove USB hubs, and connect the dongle with a short USB-C to USB-A extension so it is not blocked behind a metal case or console.

Build a clean failure record before returning it

Before support or a return, collect one clean pass of evidence:

1. Mic mute LED turns off when the mute button is pressed.
2. Mic is extended and positioned near your mouth.
3. Settings > System > Sound > Input is set to the SteelSeries mic.
4. A Windows voice recorder or browser mic test records silence.
5. Discord/game input is not set to a webcam, controller, monitor, or Sonar device by mistake.
6. SteelSeries GG is current and Engine shows no firmware update banner.
7. The headset has been reset using the right-earcup pinhole for about 1-2 seconds.
8. The dongle has been tested in another USB port without a hub.

If all eight are true and the mic still records nothing, the likely fault is hardware, firmware state that GG cannot recover, or the wireless transmitter path. There is no detachable replacement boom mic for the Nova 7 in normal troubleshooting, so the real next step is SteelSeries Support or a warranty claim. If the dongle is lost or physically damaged, replace the exact Nova 7 dongle; SteelSeries says dongles are model-specific and not interchangeable across headset families.
