The Right Balanced Cable for ZEN Phono 3
The question this answersWhere do these come from?
What balanced cable do I need for the ZEN Phono 3's output?
Use 4.4mm-to-dual-XLR for XLR inputs, or a 4.4mm-to-4.4mm interconnect for equipment with a balanced 4.4mm line input.
The iFi ZEN Phono 3 uses a 4.4mm balanced analogue line output. Choose a 4.4mm-to-dual-XLR cable when the next component has left and right XLR inputs, or a male-to-male 4.4mm balanced interconnect when it has a 4.4mm balanced line input.
Do not confuse this socket with a headphone output. It must feed an amplifier, preamplifier, headphone amplifier or active speakers with their own volume control. The balanced cable is not supplied with the ZEN Phono 3; iFi lists only an RCA cable in the box. iFi’s product documentation confirms the supplied accessories and two output types.
Match the cable to the receiving input
| Input on the next component | Cable from ZEN Phono 3 | Balanced connection? |
|---|---|---|
| Left and right 3-pin XLR | 4.4mm TRRRS male to two 3-pin XLR male plugs | Yes |
| 4.4mm balanced line input | 4.4mm TRRRS male-to-male interconnect | Yes |
| Left and right 6.35mm balanced TRS | 4.4mm TRRRS to two 6.35mm TRS plugs | Yes |
| Left and right RCA | Standard stereo RCA cable from the RCA outputs | No |
The important distinction is that stereo balanced line audio needs four signal conductors: positive and negative legs for both left and right channels. A cable terminating in two XLR or two TRS plugs keeps those channels separate. A conventional 3.5mm stereo aux cable does not.
XLR inputs need two male XLR plugs
For an integrated amplifier, preamplifier or pair of active monitors with XLR inputs, search for “4.4mm balanced to dual 3-pin XLR male cable.” The 4.4mm plug goes into the ZEN Phono 3; one XLR carries the left channel and the other carries the right.
This is not the same as a 4.4mm-to-single-4-pin-XLR headphone cable. A single four-pin XLR is normally associated with balanced headphones, while home and studio line inputs ordinarily use one three-pin XLR connector per channel.
iFi’s own Standard Edition cable has a 4.4mm plug, male XLR connectors and a length of 1.0 metre. Its published specifications include 22AWG OFC conductors, shielding and impedance of no more than 0.08 ohm. That is the straightforward official option when a one-metre run reaches the destination. See iFi’s 4.4mm to XLR Cable SE specifications.
The thicker premium iFi cable is not required for compatibility. iFi specifies 16AWG continuous-cast copper and silver-matrix conductors for that version, but no independent controlled measurement located for this article demonstrates that it audibly outperforms the Standard Edition between the ZEN Phono 3 and a normal high-impedance line input. Buy the premium version for its construction or preferred cable geometry, not because the Phono 3 requires it.
A 4.4mm-to-4.4mm ZEN stack
Use a male-to-male 4.4mm balanced interconnect, not a headphone replacement cable, when the receiving amplifier has a rear 4.4mm balanced line input. This is the appropriate connection between the ZEN Phono 3 and products such as the ZEN CAN 3.
The distinction between “line input” and “headphone output” matters even though both may use an identical-looking 4.4mm socket. The ZEN CAN 3’s rear balanced input is specified for a nominal 4.0V signal, has a 24k-ohm input impedance and accepts up to 7.4V RMS. Those figures appear in iFi’s ZEN CAN 3 specifications. Connect the Phono 3 to that rear input, then connect headphones to the CAN’s front headphone output.
iFi’s own 4.4mm-to-4.4mm cable is designed for balanced ZEN components. Its compact form suits vertically aligned or side-by-side ZEN units, but it is a poor choice when the components occupy different shelves; choose a longer properly wired balanced interconnect in that case.
RCA inputs do not require an adapter
When the amplifier or powered speakers have only RCA inputs, use the ZEN Phono 3’s RCA outputs. A 4.4mm-to-RCA cable cannot preserve a balanced connection because RCA provides only one signal conductor and a shared reference per channel.
Just want the recommendation?
Skip to the picksThere is no useful compatibility gain from leaving through the balanced socket only to convert immediately to RCA. More importantly, a randomly wired headphone adapter may join conductors that a balanced line output expects to keep separate. The purpose-built RCA outputs are the unambiguous path for an unbalanced destination.
The ZEN Phono 3’s RCA and balanced sockets are outputs to a line-level component. Neither should be connected to another PHONO input, because that would send an already amplified and RIAA-equalised signal through a second phono stage. Select AUX, LINE, CD, TUNER or another ordinary line input on the amplifier.
The 4.4mm socket is not for headphones
Although 4.4mm is widely used for balanced headphones, the socket on the ZEN Phono 3 is explicitly documented as an analogue line output. iFi says it should connect to active speakers or an amplifier with a volume control. The ZEN Phono 3 manual states this directly on page 5.
The Phono 3 has no listening-volume knob and is not a headphone amplifier. Plugging headphones into it bypasses the volume-controlled headphone-amplifier stage the system needs. For headphone listening, route the 4.4mm line output into a ZEN CAN, another headphone amplifier with a balanced line input, or use the RCA outputs with a headphone amplifier that accepts RCA.
The same rule applies to a power amplifier without input attenuation: insert a preamplifier or monitor controller between the Phono 3 and power amp. A fixed phono-stage output feeding an unrestricted power amplifier gives you no safe way to set listening level.
Balanced begins at the Phono 3 output
The turntable still connects to the ZEN Phono 3 through its left and right RCA inputs, with the turntable’s ground lead attached to the ground terminal. The rear 4.4mm connector is an output and cannot accept a balanced tonearm cable. The official manual identifies RCA as the only analogue input and separately identifies 4.4mm and RCA as outputs.
Therefore, buying a balanced output cable does not replace the turntable-to-phono RCA cable. It changes only the connection from the phono preamplifier to the next line-level component.
What the larger balanced-output number means
iFi specifies a maximum balanced output of 19.98V RMS into 100k ohms and 12.75V RMS into 600 ohms, compared with 10.07V and 7.94V respectively from RCA. Its stated output impedances are no more than 200 ohms balanced and 100 ohms single-ended. These are maximum-output test figures at less than 1 percent THD+N—not a promise that the Phono 3 continuously sends nearly 20 volts. The load conditions are given in the official manual.
If the receiving amplifier clips or sounds unexpectedly harsh, verify the cartridge-appropriate gain setting before blaming the cable. The available ZEN Phono 3 gain settings are 36, 48, 60 and 72dB, and excessive gain can overload the next input on loud record peaks.
Independent reviewers have listened to the ZEN Phono 3 in reference systems: What Hi-Fi used both a Rega Planar 3 RS Edition setup and a Technics SL-1000R with a moving-coil cartridge. However, its published review does not provide a controlled measurement comparing RCA with the 4.4mm output or one balanced cable with another. Read the independent What Hi-Fi test. The defensible reason to choose balanced is connection compatibility and better rejection of interference over difficult or longer runs—not an unsupported promise that a costly cable will transform the sound.
Before ordering, check four things: the destination really has a balanced input, it provides volume control somewhere downstream, the connector gender is correct, and the cable reaches without putting sideways strain on the Phono 3’s 4.4mm socket. For most XLR-equipped systems, the answer is a 4.4mm-to-dual-3-pin-XLR-male balanced line cable.
