RTX 3070 Founders Edition vs Triple-Fan: Which to Get
The questionWhere do these come from?
Founders edition vs typical triple fan 30 series
I'm looking at 3070's right now to upgrade and I'm debating whether or not to get a founders edition (which I like the look of) or a typical triple fan like a gigabyte.
Pick a triple-fan 3070 for lower temperatures and noise; the Founders Edition only wins in small cases or when it is the card on offer.
A triple-fan custom RTX 3070 such as the MSI Gaming X Trio or ASUS TUF is the better card for most cases, because reviewers measured it cooler and quieter than the Founders Edition at the same performance. The Founders Edition is the right pick only if your case cannot take a long, thick card, or if it is the one you can actually get.
The short comparison
| Verdict | Measured behaviour | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI Gaming X Trio | Buy | Legit Reviews: 64C after an hour at 1440p, fans silent at idle, about 1200 RPM peak | Large; check case clearance |
| ASUS TUF Gaming 3070 OC | Consider | TechSpot: 62C at 1400 RPM, stock | Same size concern |
| Founders Edition | Consider | Legit Reviews: 70C in the same test; TechSpot: hotter and louder | Runs warmer; 12-pin adapter |

What the temperature gap really means
Legit Reviews recorded 64C for the MSI against 70C for the Founders Edition after an hour of 1440p gaming. TechSpot, overclocking all three, saw the Founders Edition reach 74C at 1800 RPM while the MSI held 62C at 1300 RPM and the TUF 63C at 1500 RPM. HEXUS called the MSI possibly the coolest 3070 it had tested, at 63C under load.
Those are tests by other outlets; this site has not run the cards. Neither number is dangerous: 70C is well within the safe range for this GPU. What the gap buys you is lower fan speed, and so less noise. The Founders Edition has to spin about 500 RPM faster than the MSI to hold its temperature in TechSpot’s overclocked test. None of the sources found here published decibel readings, so treat “quieter” as a fan-speed finding, not a dBA figure.
Just want the recommendation?
Skip to the picksPerformance is not the deciding factor
TechSpot reported both partner cards holding about 1935 MHz at stock, and the cooler designs mostly buy headroom rather than frames. Expect the difference in games to be small, only a few percent at most, with the same 8GB of GDDR6 on every variant. If you want a more capable card, the choice is a different GPU, not a different cooler.
When the Founders Edition is the right card
- Small or mid-size case. The Founders Edition is a dual-slot card and far shorter than most triple-fan models, which are often 28 to 32 cm long and closer to three slots thick. Check your case’s maximum GPU length against the specific model’s listed length before buying either.
- Airflow through the case. Its flow-through design pushes some heat toward the CPU cooler and top exhaust, so it suits a case with an exhaust fan above the card.
- Power connector. It uses NVIDIA’s 12-pin connector with a supplied adapter to two 8-pin cables. That works on any PSU with two free 8-pin PCIe outputs, but it is more cable clutter than a custom card with standard connectors.
When to choose the triple-fan card
Pick the MSI or ASUS if your case has the room, if you run a quiet system, or if the card will sit in a warm room. The extra heatsink mass also gives more headroom if you tune clocks. The TUF and the MSI measured within about a degree of each other in TechSpot’s stock test, so choose between them by case fit, looks and whichever listing is in better condition.
Buying one now
The RTX 3070 is long out of production, so what you find is mostly used or leftover stock. Whichever you pick, ask whether the card has been used for mining, check that all fans spin and that the seller accepts returns. Used Founders Editions have the added risk of a thermal pad that has slumped, which is one reason a card that runs hot should be treated with suspicion. That is a general used-GPU concern, not a finding from the reviews above.
What to skip
Skip any triple-fan card you have not measured against your case. A card that does not fit is a worse purchase than a warmer Founders Edition that does. No dBA data was found for these cards, so choose on measured temperature and fan speed, and accept that the exact noise difference is not independently settled.
The bottom line
Both are defensible — the split is what you do with it:
