Run this quick check with the cooker cool and no perishable food inside:

A stationary timer can be normal preheating

Do not confuse “started but preheating” with “still flashing and refusing to start.” Several Good-to-Go programmes wait for a target temperature before counting down.

For example, Boil can continue showing its default 30-minute duration while the water heats. That is normal. If the time itself remains flashing after I/O is pressed, however, preheating has not begun.

The display showing ---- is also not an error code by itself. According to the manual, it means the heat is off and the cooker is ready to be programmed. The manual documents no child lock, button-lock sequence or factory-reset procedure. Holding Temperature for three seconds merely changes between Celsius and Fahrenheit; it will not unlock or reset the cooker.

Reseat the removable control panel safely

The detachable panel contains the mains lead and connects to the cooking vessel. A poor fit, moisture or contamination around that connection is therefore worth excluding before declaring the appliance dead.

1. Press I/O if necessary, unplug the cooker and let it cool completely.
2. Slide the control panel out of the cooking pot.
3. Inspect the panel and its mating area for moisture, food residue, grease, scorching, deformation or a damaged cable. Do not insert metal tools into the connection.

A blown plug fuse is not a persuasive explanation when the screen illuminates and the mode keys respond—the appliance is already receiving power. Do not fit a higher-rated fuse or bypass any protection. If the cable, plug or connector is discoloured, melted, loose or damaged, stop immediately and do not reconnect it.

Use Boil to separate a button fault from a heating fault

After reseating the panel, a water-only Boil test provides a clearer diagnosis than risking a meal:

1. Add water to the cool pot and fit the glass lid. Do not run the pot empty.
2. Select Boil; its default cooking duration is 30 minutes.
3. Press I/O once.
4. Confirm that the display stops flashing.
5. Allow the unit to preheat without touching the metal cooking vessel.

If the display remains flashing and there is no confirmation after pressing I/O, the start input is not being registered. If the display changes to its running state but the water remains completely cold, the start command worked but the heater, connector, thermal protection or control electronics did not. If the water heats, the unchanged timer is normal until the cooker reaches 100°C; it should then beep twice and start counting down.

Water that reaches a boil while the timer still never starts points instead to a temperature-sensing or control fault. Failure in only one mode suggests a programme key, sensor or controller problem. None of these internal failures has a safe user repair specified by Russell Hobbs.
